Cape Cod & Nantucket

Hi everybody! Sorry for the delay in getting this posted, but this is the first evening I've been able to sit down and organize everything. I had a blast at the Cape last weekend, and I shall tell you about my time and share some pictures with you. I went with Jeff & Jen, friends of mine from church. To begin, we drove down to the Cape on Friday evening after work and got to Jen's parents' house in time to go to bed. On Saturday morning, we got up to catch the ferry to Nantucket.

Nantucket is an island, and the only access to it (and to Martha's Vineyard as well) is by boat or by plane. The ferry ride from the Cape to the island is about 2 hours and 15 minutes long, which is kind of crazy. The weather was beautiful on Saturday morning, so we sat on the top level of the ferry and enjoyed the glorious ride over to the island. Here are a few pictures from the boat. This is Jeff and Jen (snacking on donuts!), me and Jen's mom, and the view we had.

I will say that it's really impossible to convey the beauty of the surroundings by a picture, but as we got further into our journey, we got to the place where we could no longer see the mainland and we couldn't yet see the island. For as far as you looked, all you could see was water and sky. As I sat there, I felt God say to me, "Your view of Me is too small. Don't let your world be too small because your view of me is too small." Something for us all to ponder and remember....

Because Nantucket is an island, all of their supplies have to be boated or flown in. This is an example of how they get their groceries.

The main "town" area is very quaint and old fashioned. Here are a few pictures of that.

Nantucket is a VERY expensive island. Jen's mom was telling us that the millionaires are having to leave now because they can't afford to live there anymore. The billionaires are buying out the millionaires. Everything there was very expensive. It cost almost $5 to get ice cream! We went in one store and looked at a few clothing items. There was a dress that was a very simple strapless dress, and I took a picture of the price tag because I was so shocked at the cost. Needless to say, we didn't buy anything!

We went to Brant Point to take pictures of a lighthouse. Here are some of my favorite shots of that, as well as some fun pictures we took of each other.

We ate lunch at a little cafe that was inside of an old train car.

Here is an example of a typical Cape style house, and then just a picture I like from someone's yard.

After a fun day of sightseeing and enjoying Nantucket, we got back on the ferry to go home. We got to enjoy a beautiful sunset. Here are a few pictures of God's glorious artwork.

On Sunday, we hung out with Jen's family for the day and had a great time. Hopefully at some point soon, I will have access to a video that I can post of some hilarious fun that we had with a green machine. :)

Thanks for sticking with me to the end of this lengthy post, but I hope you enjoyed it! I'll try to post again soon to update you on life in general. Love you all!

Preview

Hey everyone! I just got home from my weekend at the Cape, and I am soooo tired! :) Therefore, I am not going to tell you all about my weekend right at the moment except to say that it was awesome, and I had a blast! Once I have a chance to go through photos and have time to sit and post them and tell you stories, I will do so. For now, here is a preview. Have a great week!

Yikes!

So last night, the temperature got down to 39 degrees. I'm not sure I'm ready for the cold weather to arrive! Too bad for me though because it'll be here whether I'm ready or not....although I am excited about the snow again. It's supposed to warm back up this weekend, but I suppose that was a preview of things to come. It was nice to sleep though - we had our windows open, and I was snuggled in my warm bed. It's kind of like camping inside! :)

Anyway, I'm leaving this evening to go down to the Cape, and it has been decided that we are going to go to Nantucket on Saturday. I can't wait! I think it will be tons of fun, and I am very excited to be able to take lots of pictures and then to share them with all of you.

In the meantime, enjoy your weekend!

Fall Is Falling!

Howdy, folks! Well, up here on the New England coast, fall is inching its way into existence. We're starting to see hints of color in some of the trees, the temperature is getting cooler..... This week is supposed to be absolutely gorgeous, with highs in the upper 60's. This truly is one of my favorite times of year here. I wish that I could share the smell of the ocean and the sound of the waves and the refreshing air with you. Instead, I can only hope that the pictures I take convey a small taste of what it's like to be here in person.

I went for a walk this evening when I got home from work. It's been awhile since I've walked with my camera, but I did tonight, and it was awesome. God's magnitude and awesome power and love never fail to overwhelm me when I experience Him in the midst of His glorious creation. The Psalms instruct us to "taste and see that the Lord is good", and when I walk here, I can literally do that. Here are some samples from this evening.

I apologize for the length between posts. Last week was absolutely insane. I'll try to get back to posting regularly though, because I want to keep you updated on what's happening here AND I don't want you to stop reading the blog!

I do have some exciting news to share.... This weekend, I have the opportunity to go with some friends of mine down to the Cape! On Saturday, we are either going to go to Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard, and I am really excited! I can't wait to see everything down there, and I promise to take some cool pictures and tell you all about my adventures! I hope that you are all well and that you have a great week. Miss and love you!

A Lovely Evening

Aside from Tropical Storm Hanna, which really didn't do that much here, the weather has been absolutely gorgeous. From now until the end of October is one of my favorite times of the year on the great North Shore. If anyone feels the need to come and visit, now is the time! AirTran has had some great deals, so check it out! Brother and I would love to have visitors.

Last night, we grilled some hotdogs out on the porch on our George Foreman grill, and then we sat on the porch with our friend Rachael and had a yummy meal. I have been out on the porch a lot lately, and Ellie loves it. She thinks our neighbor's chair is her own personal throne, and she fell asleep in it a couple of times yesterday. Here she is this evening, being queenly (and looking tired).

High tide happens in the evening here, and you can sit on the porch and hear the ocean waves pounding the shore. You can actually kind of hear it in stereo because we are surrounded on 3 sides by the ocean, and you can hear 2 of the 3 sides. It's a glorious sound! To give you a brief glimpse, here's a view from my porch when I got home this evening.

Have a great week!

Weddings & Tropical Storms

Salutations from the tropical stormish North Shore! It's been kind of an interesting day around here. As I mentioned in my last post, I helped with a wedding this weekend. Here are a few pictures of the flowers - a bridesmaid bouquet, a corsage, and the groom flower.

For the reception, I also put the flowers and some candy shells on the cake. The cake came already iced and with ribbon and decoration on it, so I didn't have a lot to do with it, but here's a picture.

This picture is really dark, but this is my friend Lisa, who is due with her first child in about 5 weeks, and a picture of brother and Ellie.

As far as the tropical storm goes, brother and I made it to the reception site early to decorate the cake, so we missed the rain, but it POURED for most of the reception. When we left, it had stopped, but the worst of it is supposed to hit in the middle of the night while we sleep. We could get wind gusts over 40mph, so that'll shake our little apartment. :) Tomorrow is supposed to be pretty nice though, so I don't think this will affect us too much. If we have cool waves when it's light, I'll take pictures, but so far, the waves during the nor'easter last fall were better.

Going to go relax for awhile now that the wedding stuff is done. Chat with you soon!

Sunflower

Happy Friday! The other day when I was driving to work, about a block and a half from where we live, I noticed the tallest sunflower I have ever seen growing in someone's yard. It looked really cool, so I made a mental note to remember to take a picture of it. When I was driving home yesterday, the sun was shining on it just right and I had my camera in my car, so I parked in my spot and walked back to take a picture. The homeowners were out and very gracious to allow me to photograph their flower. The blue you see in the background behind it is the ocean. Not a bad view, is it?

I'm helping with a wedding this weekend - helping with the flowers, centerpieces, and I'm putting the flowers on the cake. I'll be sure and post pictures later in the weekend. We're also expecting Tropical Storm Hanna to hit here sometime tomorrow. The wind is already picking up. If we get any good waves, I'll try to get some pictures of that as well. Have a great weekend!

Labor Day Musings

Greetings dear family and friends at the end of this Labor Day weekend, where we have celebrated laboring by not laboring! I love holiday weekends! It's been a fantastic weekend of refreshing rest and hanging out with friends and enjoying absolutely gorgeous weather. I just got home a little while ago from spending time with some of my friends who invited me over for a cookout. It was so much fun - I love kindred spirits that God gives us in our lives, don't you?

It's been a weekend filled with some reflection, so I thought I'd try to put some of my ponderings "on paper" as it were and share it with all of you. At church yesterday, the sermon was based off of the verses in Hebrews 12:1-3. If you aren't familiar with the passage, go read it and then come back and finish the blog. ;) The premise of the sermon was that God has a story in progress and are we part of it or are we just watching from the sidelines?

Our community group gets underway this week, and I've been thinking a lot about the fall. I think as believers it is so easy to just sort of "go with the flow" and not really live intentionally. I've been reminded again and again how much is at stake in this life - even when we're not aware of it. As believers, I think it is our role to challenge and encourage one another to "throw off the things that hinder us" as we run this race together. I don't want to grow weary and lose heart, and I want to intentionally walk with God every day, and follow wherever He might lead, in complete trust and with no fear. To do that, I need my brothers and sisters in Christ cheering me on, celebrating the joys, sharing the heartaches, challenging me to get beyond my fears and to live each day fully engaged in what God is doing in and around me. And I need to be willing to do that for others.

This picture is one of my favorite ones that I took this summer. I love the simple beauty of it, but I also love how that though there is an apparent path visible, you can't see where the next turn takes you. As children of God, we know how the story ends, but we don't know the path that God will put us on to get there. There can be a fear in that - holy crap, what might God ask of me? But if we know how it ends - and we trust in His love for us - then we can move forward confidently and with great hope, running the race with great endurance and expectation.

As we start a new month, let's live together in such a way that the footprints that we leave will point those who come behind us toward the One who is our hope.
